Benrahma wasn't a central midfielder at Brentford. He played there just once! He got 28 goals and 22 assists in 65 games as a LW, and played as a RW 26 times (with 2 goals and 5 assists).

i havent chedked the stats but he was never a CM for them - left sided mostly AIRC

Fornals played about 60% of his games at Villareal in the centre and the rest on the flanks.

Benrahma wasn't a central midfielder at Brentford. He played there just once! He got 28 goals and 22 assists in 65 games as a LW, and played as a RW 26 times (with 2 goals and 5 assists).

In 250+ games Bowen has played wide left less than a dozen times. He's a left footer playing RW, like countless others these days.

Paqueta played as a no 10 as many times as he did as a no 8 when at Lyon, and when he did play as a no 8 it was in a 433 without a no 10 being played. He's also mainly played as a no 10 or LW for Brazil.

You're right about Downes though.

The biggest problem I have with Soucek is that whenever he receives the ball, he needs to do this 1/2 second shuffle of the the feet to get the ball ready to pass.

A half second enough to have someone on you or at least close down a passing lane.

Just prevents so many attacks.

Probably the same if he is further up.

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Bournemouth - Official Match Thread
We cannot be effective at a passing game while the likes of Soucek, Bowen, Johnson, Cresswell and others when they play like Antonio, Coufal struggle with accurate passing over a game. To be honest, Scamacca and Paqueta have been guilty of it too at times but they are still getting acquainted with the way we play etc.

Need 2 stronger full backs one might be Kehrer. Not sure about Emerson. Moyes not convinced ? Need Downes in for Soucek in the defensive role. Soucek is the very poor man’s Rodri. Tall, gets a long leg tackle in sometimes but woeful control and passing and painfully slow. As mentioned let him play the forward role as he has a physical presence in the box

Maybe Aguerd is the key. I see when Scamacca is up top we have stopped hitting the long diagonal or ball in the channel and are trying to build attacks by passing. Just we seem so slow at it?

Playing players in positions they did not make their name in is puzzling to say the least.

Downes a DM played right midfield and then as a no 10.
Fornals wide left even though he had only ever played central midfield in Spain.
Benrahma played wide left although he is a central midfielder or was at Brentford.
Bowen a wide left player but played on the right ? I seem to recall someone saying Moyes likes wide men to cut in so swaps them ?

Paqueta made a name for himself at Lyon in a deeper no 8 role. Moyes plays him as a no 10 ?

At least Moyes switched to the logical 4-3-3. Attackingwise this will not work if you put on 3 defensive midfielders. Downes should be in Souceks position. If Paqueta is not fit you could put Benrahma or even Fornals in the 10 position.

Because we dont have any depth in our attacks, we are too predictable going forward. Look at yesterday's game. Bowen coming in the ball constantly and was tracking back with the ball all the time. Benrahma comes in the ball and starts his magic from there. Scamacca most of the time dropping deep to even get a touch of the ball. With Paqueta he can feed of these through balls. But without a nr 10 this is not working.

Only players with depth we have are Cornet and Antonio. To compromise defenders and create space for Scamacca imo one of the 2 needs to play on the left wing.

Looking forward to “ Nathan Aguerd “ being avail . Hope he is as good as Moyes thinks he is .
However in spite of all the centre half’s we have I think we need another to replace Zouma .
He played ok last night , but he is too slow , cumbersome and totally ill at ease with the ball at his feet .
Ogbonna is sadly not an option any longer , neither is Dawson , injury prone now . Johnson
not an option imo .
We need a defensive unit that are all comfortable on the ball if we want to progress and fully integrate the likes of Paqueta and Scamacca.

Downes is proving a key player. Anyone else notice how Cresswell is so much better with him making sure we keep possession in key areas?

Out of interest, what was the point of Emerson if he's not going to play left back? Is he now competing with Benrahma, Fornals, Cornet for the Left Wing/Forward spot?

It's not been highlighted enough in my opinion but we have gone into another season with just 1 left back and he's soon to be 33 years old and in rapid decline.\\_______

Think Johnson's been dodgy for a couple of games. I'd love to see Kehrer/Aguerd/Zouma/Cresswell sooner rather than later.

We've all been a bit harsh after a couple of beers......

Man Utd will tear us a new one with their pace.

Sorry Vexed but I think Soucek is nowhere near the player he was. Granted he could have had a goal yesterday but 2 seasons ago he was attacking every corner (a bit like Daws does).

Anybody who thinks Johnson is good enough needs to see a fucking shrink.

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Bournemouth - Official Match Thread
Ok, so i don't get to go to as many games as I would like; but living down the South West it's not surprising. Saying that...

Last nigh.

For what it's worth I thought that Johnstone is barely good enough for the Championship. Soucek has totally lost it over the last 2 years and should now be warming the bench.

We have got to play through the middle more or at least get some crosses in that Scamacca can get on the end of. If we don't we will turn him into another failed striker (and i think the lad has real quality). Bowen would be a world beater with a decent right back behind him. Benramma is far better than he has been and was our best player last night.

We can't play with 3 defensive midfielders at home

We were way too pedestrian last night, sometimes going from a good attacking opporunity to playing across the back over and over again.

Frankly, I don't think we will kick on with Moyes. Up to now he's done a reasonable job. We need to progress in how we play.

He's been a good servant but could become unpopular if he is not given any support/cover this season.

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Bournemouth - Official Match Thread
Hmmm. Moyes plays his favourites all the time and simultaneously doesn't know what his best team is.
His best team is clearly

Fabianski

Kehrer Zouma Dawson/Agurd Cresswell

Rice Soucek

Paqueta

Bowen Scammacca Benrahma/Fornals/Cornet

The attacker on the left is the only one he's vaguely confused about, and he'd probably argue his picks that according to the opposition.

Just because you (or me) don't agree with him, doesn't mean he doesn't know his best team.

Any Old Iron 3:22 Tue Oct 25
Re: ⚽ West Ham v Bournemouth - Official Match Thread
The problem with Moyes is twofold;

He doesn't know what his 1st XI is, and

He's way too tactically negative.

I think the second issue needs solving first which then might lead to him figuring out the first. Start playing a more attacking line-up, instead of 3 holding midfielders versus an ordinary side, and then he might just discover that playing a more offensive game can lead to positive outcomes.
